Brentwood guide area

The City of Austin maps the Brentwood planning area in two parts, one of which is Romeria Gateway. Both are shown here.

Burnet Road is the western edge, North Lamar Boulevard the eastern edge, West 45th Street the southern edge, and Justin Lane the northern edge.

About the mapNeighborhood-association, ZIP, census, school, real-estate, and everyday local definitions can differ. This is not a legal, school, zoning, flood, parcel, or MLS boundary.

History of Brentwood

  1. The Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired moved to its West 45th Street campus before most of present-day Brentwood was annexed by Austin.

  2. Kenneth Threadgill opened a Gulf station and beer joint at 6416 North Lamar. The premises later became the original Threadgill's restaurant and closed in 2020.

  3. The City plan records most of Brentwood as annexed in 1946 and the remaining area in 1951.

  4. Brentwood Elementary opened for the 1951–52 school year, and the City acquired Brentwood Park in 1951.

  5. City records conflict on the pool date: a planning image says 1952, while later aquatic material lists construction in 1954.

Homes in Brentwood

The adopted 2004 plan described a mostly detached-house interior, with mixed residential, multifamily, and commercial areas along parts of the corridors.

Postwar and mid-century construction is an important part of Brentwood's housing history, but the current share of homes by year, type, or architectural style has not been measured.

The 2004 plan describes conditions at that time, not current properties. This guide does not include neighborhood-wide housing or market statistics.

Block conditions in Brentwood

Corridor-fronting, interior, school-adjacent, and park-adjacent blocks can have different traffic, access, and immediate surroundings.

North Lamar Boulevard at Brentwood Street

Built around 1950–51. Early tenants included a drugstore, barber, and beauty salon; sources disagree on whether another early tenant was a grocery or dry cleaner.

The restaurant began near Burnet and Koenig in 1953, moved north in 2008, and closed in 2018. The original edge premises and later 6801 Burnet address are separate locations.

Founded elsewhere in 1958, the business moved to Grover in 1997 and closed in 2020. The Grover building was not the original 1958 location.

Thom's Market closed in April 2025. No direct source confirmed a successor operating at this address on the review date.
